When is the best time to hold an event in Barcelona?

The best times for a corporate event in Barcelona are April to June and mid-September to early November: mild temperatures, long days and plenty of choice. Before setting a date, cross-check three calendars: the weather, the 2027 public holidays and the trade show weeks, when hotels fill up and rates rise.

When is the best time to hold an event in Barcelona?

The date of an event in Barcelona is decided between three calendars that do not always line up. The weather calendar, which favours spring and autumn. The public holiday calendar, which in Catalonia has particular dates such as Sant Joan and the Diada. And the trade show calendar, which fills the city's hotels in certain weeks. This guide cross-checks them month by month so you can choose based on data, and it is written from our experience organising MICE events in Barcelona all year round.

The short answer

Season Overall rating Ideal for Watch out for
Spring (April to June) Very good Congresses, incentives, outdoor galas Easter, high demand for venues
Summer (July and August) Mixed Afternoon and evening events, seaside incentives Heat, Spanish holidays, summer pricing
Autumn (September to mid-November) Very good Conventions, congresses, launches Occasional heavy rain, the Diada and La Mercè
Winter (mid-November to March) Good for indoor events Kick-offs, meetings, hotel events ISE and MWC weeks, short days

Turisme de Barcelona describes the typical meeting held in the city in 2025 as a corporate meeting of around 100 delegates held in the second quarter. In other words, spring is the benchmark season and, for that very reason, also the most competitive.

Barcelona weather month by month

AEMET (Spain's State Meteorological Agency) climate normals for the Barcelona Airport station (1981-2010). These are averages: any given year may be warmer or wetter, and in the city centre summer nights tend to be slightly warmer than at El Prat.

n/a: no figure published in the AEMET table.

Two practical takeaways from this table:

  • September and October are the wettest months, but with few rainy days. The rain comes as short, intense storms. An outdoor cocktail reception in October is viable with a marquee or a backup room booked.
  • July is the driest and sunniest month, and August the hottest. In summer we schedule outdoor events from sunset onwards.

2027 public holidays in Catalonia

The Generalitat de Catalunya approved the 2027 working calendar with 12 common public holidays. City councils such as Barcelona's add two local holidays.

Date Day Holiday Impact on events
1 January Friday New Year's Day Week of very low corporate activity
6 January Wednesday Epiphany Breaks up the first working week of the year
26 March Friday Good Friday Easter: teams on holiday, city busy with tourists
29 March Monday Easter Monday Long weekend in Catalonia
1 May Saturday Labour Day No effect on working days in 2027
24 June Thursday Sant Joan The night before (23 June) is a night of street parties across the city
11 September Saturday National Day of Catalonia (Diada) Rallies in the city centre; avoid transfers that day
12 October Tuesday Spanish National Day Possible long weekend with Monday 11
1 November Monday All Saints' Day Long weekend
6 December Monday Constitution Day Long weekend running into the 8th
8 December Wednesday Immaculate Conception Very short week in December
25 December Saturday Christmas Day Sant Esteve (26 December) falls on a Sunday in 2027

Barcelona local holidays. In 2025 they were Whit Monday (Pascua Granada) and 24 September, La Mercè day. At the time of writing, the City Council has not yet published the 2027 dates. If the same criteria are applied, they would be Monday 17 May and Friday 24 September 2027; confirm before setting a date. La Mercè, the city's main festival, fills streets and squares with activities for several days around 24 September.

Trade shows and weeks of high hotel pressure

The major international trade shows at Fira Barcelona fill hotels in the city and the metropolitan area. If your event is not linked to the show, avoid those weeks. If it is, book well in advance.

Event Dates Venue Effect
ISE 2027 2 to 5 February 2027 Fira Barcelona Gran Via High demand for hotels and venues for side events
MWC Barcelona 2027 1 to 4 March 2027 Fira Barcelona Gran Via The week of highest hotel pressure of the year
Smart City Expo World Congress November (3 to 5 in 2026) Fira Barcelona Gran Via High demand during the week of the event

For all of the year's trade shows, with dates and venues, see the Barcelona trade show calendar 2027. If your company is exhibiting at MWC and wants to host something that week, we explain how in events during MWC.

One 2027 fact that frees up dates: the Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is not on the 2027 calendar, as it alternates with Spa-Francorchamps and will return in 2028, according to published information on the F1 calendar.

Pros and cons of each season

Spring (April to June)

For

  • Average temperatures from 13.7 °C in April to 20.9 °C in June, with more than 220 hours of sunshine a month.
  • Long days: sunset cocktail receptions and dinners on terraces and in gardens.
  • City and suppliers in full swing.

Against

  • It is the most sought-after season for congresses and conventions, so unique venues and the leading hotels are booked well in advance.
  • Easter (in 2027, 26 to 29 March including the Monday holiday) and the May long weekends affect attendance from Spanish audiences.
  • June is packed with end-of-year events and the Sant Joan street parties on 23 June, with heavy noise and traffic that night.

Summer (July and August)

For

  • The most settled weather of the year: July has only 1.8 rainy days on average.
  • Ideal for seaside incentives, water activities and outdoor dinners from 21:00.
  • Better availability at some corporate venues, especially in August.

Against

  • Heat: average maximums of 28 °C in July and 28.5 °C in August, with humidity. Daytime sessions should be indoors.
  • In August many Spanish companies close or work with reduced teams, and we notice it with some local suppliers too.
  • The city is in peak tourist season: more traffic in the centre and at the main sights.

Autumn (September to mid-November)

For

  • Temperatures still high in September (21.7 °C on average) and mild in October (17.8 °C).
  • It is the other big season for conventions, launches and second-half kick-offs.
  • The sea keeps nights warm until October.

Against

  • September and October have the highest average rainfall (81 and 91 mm), in the form of storms. A plan B is essential for outdoor events.
  • The Diada (11 September) and La Mercè (around 24 September) concentrate events in the city centre.
  • November brings international trade shows and congresses that stretch hotel supply in specific weeks.

Winter (mid-November to March)

For

  • Outside trade show weeks, better venue availability and more room to negotiate with hotels.
  • Mild temperatures for an indoor event: 9.2 °C on average in January and maximums of 13 to 14 °C.
  • A good time for January and February kick-offs, when companies launch their sales year.

Against

  • Short days: it is already dark by six in the evening in December and January.
  • December fills up with company Christmas dinners and public holidays (6, 8 and 25 December).
  • February and March are when ISE and MWC take place.

Which time of year suits each format?

Format Best time Why
Congress April to June, late September to November Fits the academic calendar and avoids holidays
Convention or kick-off January to March (outside trade shows), September and October Start of the financial year or the second half
Incentive trip May, June, September and October Good weather for outdoor activities and a calmer city than in summer
Outdoor gala dinner June and September Warm evenings and less risk of rain than in October
Product launch September to November, February to May Active press calendar; watch out for your industry's trade show weeks
Leadership meeting All year Indoor format, not very weather-sensitive

What changes in production month by month

The weather does not just decide whether it rains. It also changes the set-up, the timings and some budget lines.

Period What we plan for in production
December to February Heating in marquees and on terraces, a large cloakroom, outdoor cocktail receptions only with heaters and kept short
March and April An indoor plan B for any outdoor element, because spring alternates warm and cool days
May and June Terraces and gardens in full use; book early because this is when they are most in demand
July and August Daytime sessions in air-conditioned rooms, water and shade for any transfer, outdoor dinners after sunset
September and October A marquee or backup room written into the contract because of storms; evenings still warm enough for outdoor dinners
November Most events indoors; outdoor elements only with a plan B and an afternoon schedule

Two details we always check: the time of sunset, which decides when a cocktail reception with a view begins, and the wind direction at seafront venues, which affects marquees, screens and sound.

How to spot hotel pressure before you book

Major trade shows are not the only events that fill the city. International medical congresses, stadium concerts and sporting events also stretch supply in specific weeks. Before setting a date we run three checks:

  1. The Fira de Barcelona and CCIB calendars for the chosen week and the week before, because build-up crews also occupy hotels.
  2. An availability request to three or four hotels in the category you need. If several reply with no availability or with rates well above normal, it is a sign of a large event in the city.
  3. A review of the city's cultural and sporting calendar for those dates.

If pressure is high, moving the event by a week usually works out better than negotiating over an impossible date.

Holidays outside Barcelona that affect your event

If your attendees are coming from other countries, their holidays matter as much as the Catalan ones. Check at least:

  • National long weekends in the country of origin, which reduce attendance or push up flight prices.
  • School holidays, which affect the availability of attendees with families.
  • End of quarter or financial year, when sales teams do not want to leave the office.
  • Religious or cultural festivals relevant to your audience, which also shape menus and timings.

How to choose and secure your date

  1. Set two or three possible dates rather than just one. A week's flexibility is usually worth more than any negotiation.
  2. Cross-check the dates against trade shows, public holidays and long weekends in your attendees' countries of origin, not just Barcelona's.
  3. Ask venues and hotels for options with an expiry date before committing budget.
  4. If the event has outdoor elements, book the plan B in the same contract: a backup room or a marquee.
  5. In spring and autumn, decide earlier. For large groups, at least 9 to 12 months ahead.
  6. Factor in the tourist tax if there are overnight stays, as it is added to the cost per night. We explain it in our guide to the tourist tax for groups.

Checklist for setting the date

  • Alternative dates defined
  • Fira Barcelona trade shows and large congresses that week checked
  • Catalan public holidays, Barcelona local holidays and holidays in countries of origin checked
  • Average weather for the month and plan B for outdoor elements
  • Sunset time for cocktail receptions and photos
  • Venue availability and hotel room blocks on option
  • Impact on attendance: school holidays and long weekends

Would you like help choosing a date?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for an event in Barcelona?

May, June, late September and October tend to be the most balanced months: average temperatures between 17 and 22 °C according to AEMET's climate normals for the airport, long days and suppliers in full swing. October is, however, the wettest month of the year on average.

Is August a good time for an event in Barcelona?

It can work for outdoor evening events, but August is the hottest month of the year, with an average maximum of 28.5 °C, and many Spanish companies and teams are on holiday. We do not recommend it for conventions or congresses with a local audience.

Which weeks should you avoid in Barcelona in 2027?

The weeks of major trade shows at Fira Barcelona Gran Via, such as ISE (2 to 5 February 2027) and MWC (1 to 4 March 2027), because of hotel prices and availability. It is also worth checking Easter (26 to 29 March), Sant Joan (24 June) and the local holidays.

What are the 2027 public holidays in Catalonia?

1 and 6 January, 26 and 29 March (Good Friday and Easter Monday), 1 May, 24 June, 11 September, 12 October, 1 November, 6 and 8 December and 25 December. Barcelona adds two local holidays approved by the City Council.

Does it rain a lot in Barcelona?

Not many rainy days, but the rain is concentrated. According to AEMET, Barcelona airport records around 53 days a year with at least 1 mm of rain. September and October have the highest average rainfall, from short, intense storms. Any outdoor event needs a plan B.

Is winter a good time for a corporate event in Barcelona?

For indoor events, yes. Average temperatures at the airport in January are around 9 °C, there is good venue availability outside trade show weeks and hotels usually have more room for negotiation. For outdoor events, daytime is better, with heating.
