What is MICE tourism?
MICE is the term the industry uses for organised business tourism. Each letter is a type of event, with its own players and its own logic:
| Letter | Format | Who organises it | Typical example in Barcelona |
|---|---|---|---|
| M | Meetings | Companies | Leadership workshop, board meeting, training seminar |
| I | Incentives: incentive travel | Companies | Three-day trip for the year's top sellers |
| C | Conferences: congresses and conventions | Associations and companies | International medical congress, sales conference |
| E | Exhibitions or Events: trade shows and events | Trade show organisers and companies | An exhibitor's event during ISE or MWC |
In practice, the formats overlap. A congress has a social programme, a convention includes an incentive day and a trade show exhibitor organises meetings and dinners with clients. That is why a MICE agency is not defined by one specific format, but by its ability to manage groups, venues, hotels, content and logistics at the same time.
Barcelona in figures
The latest destination data come from Turisme de Barcelona's 2025 meetings tourism report and the ICCA ranking, published in May 2026.
| Indicator (2025) | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Meetings held | 1,992 (+1.2% on 2024) | Turisme de Barcelona |
| Delegates | 683,783 | Turisme de Barcelona |
| Direct economic impact | €1,240.14 million | Turisme de Barcelona |
| ICCA ranking position | 3rd in the world, after Lisbon and Paris | ICCA via Catalunya Convention Bureau |
| Meetings with fewer than 250 attendees | 78.5% | Catalunya Convention Bureau |
| Meetings held in hotels | 77.1% | Turisme de Barcelona |
Corporate versus association meetings
Companies generate most of the activity, although association congresses, with more delegates per meeting and longer stays, bring a greater economic impact.
| 2025 | Corporate meetings | Association congresses and meetings |
|---|---|---|
| Number of meetings | 1,395 (70%) | 597 (30%) |
| Delegates | 282,468 | 401,315 |
| Direct economic impact | €506.67m | €733.48m |
| Held in hotels | 92.4% | 30.3% |
The most common profile is an internationally organised corporate meeting from the technology sector, with around one hundred delegates, held in the second quarter of the year.
Where the companies come from
By organiser origin, 40.4% of corporate meetings in 2025 were organised by Spanish companies. They are followed by the United States (16.7%), the United Kingdom (14.5%), Germany (6.2%) and France (4.1%). In other words, most company meetings in Barcelona are decided outside Spain, often without in-depth knowledge of the destination. That is precisely the role of a local DMC.
By sector, technology is the leading source of meetings, both corporate and association, followed by pharma and health sciences. This fits the city's trade show calendar, with events such as MWC and ISE.
Where the money goes
The report splits the economic impact into three blocks of similar weight: accommodation (26%), delegate spending during their stay (36%) and services for the event itself (38%). Put another way, every event spreads its spending across hotels, restaurants, retail, transport and technical suppliers.

Barcelona compared with other destinations
In the 2025 ICCA ranking, Lisbon took first place and Paris second, with Barcelona third. Madrid, Spain's other major congress city, came 13th. In addition, according to the Catalunya Convention Bureau, the city already has 34 future congresses confirmed. For organisers, this means two things: very few destinations compete with Barcelona in appeal for delegates, and the best dates and venues are booked a long way ahead.
Event infrastructure
Barcelona has venues for every size of event, just a few kilometres from one another:
- CCIB. The city's largest convention centre, by the sea at the Fòrum, with capacity for 15,000 people and an auditorium of more than 3,000 seats.
- Fira Barcelona Gran Via. 240,000 m² across eight halls, home to MWC and ISE.
- Fira Barcelona Montjuïc. The historic exhibition site, at the foot of the MNAC, for mid-sized trade shows and congresses.
- Palau de Congressos de Catalunya. On the Diagonal, with an auditorium of more than 2,000 seats and 39 rooms.
- Convention hotels, within a city stock of more than 40,000 hotel rooms. We compare them in convention hotels.
- Unique venues: museums, modernista buildings, castles and viewpoints for dinners and ceremonies. See unique venues.
