Barcelona, a congress destination
In 2025 Barcelona was the third city in the world for international association meetings, according to the ICCA ranking, with 166 meetings. That position rests on a network of venues that covers everything from meetings of 200 people to congresses of 15,000 delegates. Choosing well between them is the first big decision for a congress or a large-scale convention.
Palau de Congressos de Catalunya and Palau de Congressos de Barcelona: not the same
This is the most common confusion. The Palau de Congressos de Catalunya is on Avinguda Diagonal, in Les Corts. Since 2023 it has been run by Meliá, linked to the Torre Melina hotel, and it has an auditorium for more than 2,000 people and gardens. The Palau de Congressos de Barcelona is on Montjuïc, within the Fira site, next to Plaça d'Espanya, with a 1,609-seat auditorium. When talking to suppliers or delegates, always use the full name.
How to choose the venue
- Plenary capacity. Count on the capacity of the auditorium or main room as set up, not the total capacity of the building.
- Breakout sessions. Number of simultaneous rooms and their size.
- Exhibition and posters. If sponsors are key, exhibition space matters as much as the auditorium.
- Nearby accommodation. Hotels within walking distance or connected to the venue reduce daily transfers.
- Transport. Metro, tram, train and journey time to the airport.
- Calendar. Avoid clashing with major trade shows if you do not need them: hotels and services become more expensive.
- Venue services. Ask which services the venue handles itself and which allow external suppliers.
The areas
- Diagonal Mar and Fòrum: the CCIB, with convention hotels a few steps away.
- Gran Via and L'Hospitalet: Fira de Barcelona Gran Via, the venue for the major trade shows.
- Montjuïc and Plaça d'Espanya: Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc and the Palau de Congressos de Barcelona.
- Diagonal (Les Corts): the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya with Torre Melina.
- Port Vell: the World Trade Center Barcelona, on the waterfront and within walking distance of the centre.

Convention centre or hotel?
If your event has fewer than 1,000 people and does not need a large exhibition, a convention hotel usually handles it with less logistics. To plan the calendar, see the guide to organising a congress in Barcelona and the 2027 trade show calendar.
