Choosing a convention centre in Barcelona looks simple until you find there are two "Palau de Congressos", two Fira venues and a convention centre that is also run by Fira. Each venue has a different scale, location and production logic. This comparison brings together the official figures for each one, how to get there and what type of event it suits, with the practical notes we apply when producing congresses, conventions and trade show events.
First: the two "Palau de Congressos"
This is the most common confusion in the briefs we receive, and it is worth clearing up before requesting quotes.
| Palau de Congressos de Catalunya | Palau de Congressos de Barcelona | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Avinguda Diagonal, upper part of the city (Les Corts) | Montjuïc, next to Plaça d'Espanya |
| Operator | Meliá, next to the Torre Melina hotel | Fira de Barcelona, inside the Montjuïc venue |
| Auditorium | More than 2,000 people | More than 1,600 people |
| Rooms | 39 multipurpose rooms | Separate conference rooms (Fira does not publish the number) |
| Hotel | Direct access from Torre Melina, a Gran Meliá Hotel | Hotels around Plaça d'Espanya |
| Source | Meliá | Fira de Barcelona |
When a supplier mentions the "Palau de Congressos", ask which one. It changes everything: the hotel area, transport and who you contract with.

The floor space figures are not always comparable: Fira publishes gross exhibition space, the CCIB total floor space and the WTC an overall total without breakdown. Use them as an order of magnitude and always work from the floor plans.
CCIB: the international congress centre
The Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona is on Plaça de Willy Brandt, in the Fòrum area. According to Fira de Barcelona, which lists it among its venues, it has around 100,000 m², 46 rooms, capacity for 15,000 delegates and an Auditori Fòrum with 3,082 seats. The CCIB itself reports 3,000 m² of professional kitchens, capacity to serve up to 48,000 meals a day, around 4,500 hotel rooms in the surrounding area and 445,000 attendees in 2025.
Getting there. According to the CCIB, El Maresme/Fòrum metro station is less than five minutes' walk away and the Fòrum tram stop is in front of the Auditori. The airport is 22 km away; the recommended train option is the R2 Nord, about 30 minutes.
What it suits. International medical and scientific congresses, large corporate conventions and events with many breakout rooms. Its 2027 calendar already includes congresses such as AD/PD, EPNS, ESMO Gastrointestinal Cancers, ECNP and EUROSPINE, according to the CCIB calendar.
Production notes. Internal distances are long: plan changeover times between sessions and signage. The Diagonal Mar hotels are close, but the old town is far away: if you hold dinners in the Gòtic or on Montjuïc, plan for coaches. Also check whether your date coincides with festivals at the Parc del Fòrum, such as Primavera Sound (3-5 June 2027).
Fira Barcelona Gran Via: trade fair scale
The Gran Via venue, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, has 240,000 m² of gross exhibition space across eight halls connected by a walkway, according to Fira. Hall 8 houses a modular convention centre for between 3,000 and 12,000 people. It has 4,580 parking spaces and 45 restaurants, and Fira is building a new two-storey, 60,000 m² building.
Getting there. Metro line L9 Sud links airport terminals T1 and T2 with the Fira and Europa|Fira stations, next to the venue, according to the line's entry.
What it suits. MWC, ISE, Seafood Expo Global, Smart City Expo, IBTM World and congresses with a large commercial exhibition, such as EHA2027 (10-13 June 2027). Also corporate conventions of several thousand people.
Production notes. It is a venue designed for trade fairs: stand builds and large sets are managed under strict technical regulations and venue schedules. During major fairs the surrounding area gets saturated: transport, hotels and restaurants. We have produced stands and satellite events for clients exhibiting at Gran Via, such as Provital at In-cosmetics and technology brands during ISE. We cover this in trade show hospitality and congress events.
Fira Barcelona Montjuïc and the Palau de Congressos de Barcelona
Fira's historic venue, at the foot of Montjuïc and next to Plaça d'Espanya, offers 153,000 m² of gross exhibition space across seven palaces, according to Fira's website. On its general venues page, Fira gives 150,000 m² gross, of which 42,000 are outdoors. Inside the venue is the Palau de Congressos de Barcelona, with a large auditorium for more than 1,600 people, separate conference rooms and exhibition space.
Getting there. Fira lists access by metro, FGC trains, bus, taxi and Aerobús. Plaça d'Espanya is one of the city's main transport hubs.
What it suits. Mid-sized trade fairs, congresses of 500 to 1,600 people with an exhibition, and events that want to be close to the centre and to the hotels around Plaça d'Espanya and Paral·lel. In 2027 it hosts Barcelona Wine Week, Talent Arena and Automobile Barcelona, among others.
Production notes. The palaces are historic buildings with different heights and access points: check each one separately. The location makes it easy to combine the congress with dinners at Montjuïc venues such as MNAC or Poble Espanyol, a few minutes away.
Palau de Congressos de Catalunya: congress and hotel in one complex
On the upper Diagonal, run by Meliá and with direct access from the Torre Melina, a Gran Meliá Hotel. According to Meliá, the Palau has capacity for more than 2,000 people and 39 multipurpose rooms; Hosteltur adds more than 4,000 m² of exhibition space. Meliá opened it a few months before reopening the hotel in January 2024.
What it suits. Congresses and conventions of 500 to 2,000 people that want to accommodate a large part of the group in the same complex, with breakout rooms and a commercial exhibition without transfers.
Production notes. Having the hotel and the Palau under the same operator simplifies contracting and logistics. For groups of more than 391 people, the hotel's rooms are not enough: look for additional hotels on the Diagonal.
WTC Barcelona: mid-sized format on the waterfront
The World Trade Center Barcelona is in Port Vell, on the Moll de Barcelona. According to the WTC, its convention centre offers more than 5,000 m² on the waterfront, an auditorium for up to 430 people theatre style, the Sala Ágora (up to 816 m² and 450 people theatre style or banquet), the Sala Port Vell (700 m²) and 10 modular rooms with up to 20 combinations. The complex includes the 5-star Eurostars Grand Marina hotel.
What it suits. Conventions, one-day meetings and launches of 100 to 450 people looking for a port setting a short distance from the old town.
Production notes. It is a mid-scale venue: if you need more than one 450-person plenary or a large exhibition, look at other options. Its proximity to the Gòtic and Barceloneta makes walking to dinner easy.
