Castell de Montjuïc: receptions and dinners in a fortress above the port

The Castell de Montjuïc is an 18th-century fortress on top of Montjuïc, owned by the city council. It hires out the Sant Carles and Santa Amàlia bastions, with 1,000 m² for 500 people at a drinks reception, dinner or conference. We produced the opening of the INTA trade show there for Becerril, Coca & Becerril.

What kind of events does the castle suit?

The castle is an outdoor venue with one big asset: the view. From the bastions you can see the port, the sea and much of the city. It works for welcome receptions at congresses and trade shows, themed gala dinners from spring to autumn and sunset incentive activities. It also suits outdoor presentations where the setting is part of the message. Here we produced the opening of the INTA trade show with medieval theming and live music.

Spaces and capacities

The venue hire sheet from the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona describes the Sant Carles and Santa Amàlia bastions: 1,000 m² in total and 500 people for a drinks reception, dinner, conference or concert. The same sheet lists air conditioning, toilets, kitchen, security and cleaning as not included. In other words, the space is handed over practically empty and the production builds everything.

Guided tours of the castle can be added, a good complement before dinner.

Getting there

Carretera de Montjuïc, 66. The 150 bus runs up from Plaça d'Espanya and there is parking nearby. You can also take the Montjuïc cable car and walk the last stretch, although for groups at night we always recommend coaches or shuttles to the door.

Production tips

  • Everything is production. With no kitchen or toilets included, the budget must cover catering with a field kitchen, portable toilets, generators or a power connection, lighting and security staff.
  • Wind and temperature. It is a high, exposed spot. Plan for marquees, heaters or windbreaks depending on the season, and a plan B if rain is forecast.
  • Access. The routes inside have ramps, stone and changes in level. Light the paths well and think about accessibility for every guest.
  • Visiting hours. The castle is open to the public during the day; set-ups are coordinated with closing time for visitors.

What works well nearby

On the same hill you have the MNAC for an indoor gala, the Poble Espanyol for very large groups and the Fundació Joan Miró for a reception with art. To put up speakers nearby, the Hotel Miramar Barcelona is on Montjuïc.
