What kind of events does the MNAC suit?
The Palau Nacional is one of Barcelona's most recognisable images, and guests feel it on arrival: the grand staircase, the Montjuïc fountains and the city at your feet. In terms of scale and character, the MNAC works above all for corporate gala dinners, company anniversaries, congress closing dinners and welcome receptions for trade show delegates. It also suits product launches that need a large hall and a powerful setting, or client receptions during a trade show, like the one we organised for Provital during In-Cosmetics.
Rooms and capacities
The key space is the Sala Oval, at 1,600 m², under the palace's great dome. The museum publishes these capacities: 1,200 people for dinner, 1,400 for drinks, 1,400 theatre-style or for a concert and 500 in an amphitheatre layout. For smaller groups there are other spaces for hire: the Sala de la Cúpula, the Foyer, the viewpoint terraces, the Sala Sert and the Òleum restaurant. You will find the summary in the venue data panel on this page.
Getting there
The museum is in the Parc de Montjuïc, above Plaça d'Espanya (metro L1 and L3, FGC). For a gala, the usual approach is to arrange coaches to the door: guests avoid walking up in evening wear and you control the arrival time of the whole group. If you combine the event with a congress at Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc, the transfer takes a few minutes.
Production tips
- Think about scale. The Sala Oval is very tall and very large. With fewer than 400 guests it is worth closing down the space with staging and lighting so the dinner does not look empty.
- Set-up is fast-track. As it is a museum, set-up and breakdown times depend on the institution's schedule. At the Noatum 60th anniversary gala we worked to a very tight plan with set-up crews working in parallel.
- Heritage rules. There are restrictions on loads, fixings and materials. Get the museum to approve the technical plan (rigging, screens, cold pyrotechnics or effects) before committing it to your internal client.
- Make the most of the arrival. Drinks on the terraces or a performance on the staircase (at our gala, castellers, Catalan human towers) creates a very photogenic first moment.
What works well nearby
Montjuïc brings together several venues that fit into one programme: the Poble Espanyol for an after-party or a more informal format, the Fundació Joan Miró for small receptions and the Castell de Montjuïc for outdoor activities. To accommodate the group nearby, the Hotel Miramar Barcelona is on the same hill.
