For a residential convention, the hotel is the decision that shapes everything else: budget, logistics, atmosphere and even the kind of social programme you can run. Barcelona has plenty of hotels with meeting rooms, but few that can accommodate hundreds of people and bring them together in a single plenary. This comparison covers the large convention hotels using data published by the hotel groups themselves or by the Barcelona Convention Bureau, and explains how to choose according to your format.

Two notes on the data:
- SOFIA Barcelona is the former Gran Hotel Princesa Sofía. The figures come from the announcement of its addition to The Unbound Collection by Hyatt in 2018. If your convention depends on them, confirm them with the hotel.
- Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower: the hotel group publishes the meeting space and the capacity of the Cosmos Ballroom, but not the number of bedrooms. The figure of 280 bedrooms comes from AMI Magazine.
How to choose a hotel by format and group size
There is no "best hotel" in the abstract. There is the best hotel for your format, your number of attendees and what you want them to feel when they arrive.
| Your event | What you need from the hotel | Hotels on the list that fit |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership or committee meeting, 20 to 80 people | High-quality rooms with natural light, privacy, good food | All of them; prioritise location and atmosphere |
| Kick-off or sales convention, 100 to 400 people | Plenary, 3 or 4 breakout rooms, lunch near the room, bedrooms for the whole group | Hotel Arts, W Barcelona, Leonardo Royal Barcelona Forum, Hilton Diagonal Mar, Torre Melina, Meliá Sarrià, SOFIA |
| Large convention, 400 to 1,000 people | Large plenary, exhibition space, several rooms running simultaneously | Hotel Arts, Hilton Diagonal Mar, SOFIA, Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower |
| Convention of more than 1,000 people | High-capacity plenary or a congress centre next door | Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower, Hotel Arts (up to 1,400), Torre Melina with the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, Diagonal Mar hotels with the CCIB |
| Event linked to Fira Gran Via | Proximity to the venue and to metro line L9 Sud | Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower and hotels in the Plaça d'Europa area |
| Congress at the CCIB | Hotels within walking distance of the centre | Hilton Diagonal Mar, Leonardo Royal Barcelona Forum |
| Incentive or convention with a brand image | Views, terraces, Mediterranean atmosphere | Hotel Arts, W Barcelona |
If your group exceeds 1,000 or 1,500 people in plenary, compare with a congress centre too: we explain how in our comparison of Barcelona congress centres.
Which area should your group stay in?
The area sets the atmosphere of the convention and decides how much time the group will spend on a coach.
| Area | Hotels on the list | For | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seafront (Vila Olímpica, Barceloneta) | Hotel Arts, W Barcelona | Image, terraces, beach, Mediterranean atmosphere | High demand in peak season; dinners in the centre require transport |
| Diagonal Mar and Fòrum | Hilton Diagonal Mar, Leonardo Royal Barcelona Forum | Walking distance from the CCIB, large hotels close to each other | Far from the historic centre; watch out for congresses at the CCIB and festivals at the Fòrum |
| Upper Diagonal (Les Corts, Sarrià) | Torre Melina, SOFIA, Meliá Sarrià | Quiet business district, Palau de Congressos de Catalunya next door | Less street life at night; dinners are usually elsewhere |
| Gran Via and Plaça d'Europa (L'Hospitalet) | Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower | Next to Fira Gran Via and the L9 Sud metro line to the airport | During trade show weeks the area is saturated; less of a city atmosphere |
The hotels, one by one
Hotel Arts Barcelona
A seafront tower in the Vila Olímpica, next to Port Olímpic. With 483 bedrooms, 20 meeting rooms, 2,970 m² of meeting space and a maximum capacity of 1,400 people, according to Marriott, it is one of the most complete options for high-profile conventions. It works well when the convention combines a plenary, working sessions and a gala dinner in the hotel itself. In production terms, book the outdoor areas for cocktail receptions well ahead and plan a plan B for wind.
W Barcelona
The sail-shaped building at the end of Barceloneta. It has 473 bedrooms, 19 meeting rooms and 3,432 m² of meeting space; its largest room measures 987 m² and the maximum capacity is 850 people. It suits conventions of 150 to 600 people looking for a contemporary atmosphere and sea views. As it sits at the end of the promenade, plan with the hotel where coaches will stop and stagger group arrivals and departures.
Leonardo Royal Barcelona Forum (formerly AC Hotel Barcelona Forum)
In Diagonal Mar, next to the CCIB. With 368 bedrooms, 16 meeting rooms and 2,022 m², it is a practical option for accommodating delegates at a CCIB congress or for mid-sized conventions that do not need a 5-star hotel. Maximum capacity of 670 people according to the data Marriott published when it was an AC Hotel.
Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona
Also in Diagonal Mar, on Passeig del Taulat, a few minutes from the CCIB. It has 433 bedrooms and 22 meeting rooms, with a 1,001 m² Ballroom for 1,000 people (800 theatre-style), according to its listing with the Barcelona Convention Bureau. It suits conventions of 300 to 800 people and works as the main hotel for congresses at the CCIB. The CCIB states that there are around 4,500 hotel rooms in its surroundings.
Torre Melina, a Gran Meliá Hotel
This is the former Hotel Rey Juan Carlos I on the Diagonal, reopened in 2024 after four years closed, with 391 rooms and suites according to Hosteltur. Meliá advertises 22 meeting rooms and 2,758 m² of meeting space in the hotel, plus direct access to the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, with an auditorium for more than 2,000 people and 39 rooms. It is the most complete hotel plus congress centre combination in the city for large conventions that want everything under one roof. Note: the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya (Diagonal) is not the same as the Palau de Congressos de Barcelona (Montjuïc), which belongs to Fira.
Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower
A tower on Gran Via in L'Hospitalet, near Fira Barcelona Gran Via. Hyatt advertises 4,000 m² of multipurpose space, 20 meeting rooms and the Cosmos Ballroom, with capacity for up to 1,800 people theatre-style. It is the natural choice for events linked to trade shows at Gran Via and for large conventions in a business setting. The atmosphere is more corporate than Mediterranean: if you want "Barcelona", bring it into the dinners.
SOFIA Barcelona, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt
The former Gran Hotel Princesa Sofía, on the Diagonal, near the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya and the university area. In 2018, when it joined The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, it announced 465 bedrooms, 22 multifunctional rooms over two floors and a convention hall for more than 1,000 people. It suits large conventions that want the hotel and plenary in the same building in the upper Diagonal area.
Meliá Barcelona Sarrià
In the upper part of the city, near the Diagonal. Meliá advertises almost 2,000 m² of meeting space (1,914 m²), with two multifunctional plenary rooms and 16 breakout rooms; the Sala Barcelona holds up to 550 people. A good option for conventions of 150 to 500 people that need many working rooms.
Hotels where we have produced events
As well as these large convention hotels, in and around Barcelona we have produced events at hotels such as the Hotel Miramar Barcelona on Montjuïc (Edenred's E-Day), the Meliá Barcelona Sky (Meliá's welcome party for IBTM Hosted Buyers) and hotels in Sitges for Edenred and Duscholux conventions. You can see these projects in our case studies.
Convention hotel or congress centre?
| Convention hotel | Congress centre | |
|---|---|---|
| Plenary capacity | Up to around 1,000 to 1,800 people in the largest | From hundreds to thousands of people |
| Accommodation | In the same building | In nearby hotels |
| Food and beverage | The hotel's own | The centre's catering or an external caterer |
| Production | Hotel equipment, expandable | Greater technical and build capacity |
| Cost | Predictable day delegate rate (DDR) packages | Space hire plus services |
| When to choose it | Residential conventions of 50 to 1,000 people | Large-format congresses and conventions, events with exhibitions |
In Barcelona, two combinations offer the best of both: Torre Melina with the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya, and the Diagonal Mar hotels with the CCIB.

- Available electrical power and the cost of the hotel's in-house technicians.
- Whether you can bring in an external AV supplier, and on what terms.
- Distance between the plenary, breakout rooms and lunch area.
- Natural light and whether rooms can be blacked out.
- Wifi: dedicated bandwidth for the event.
- Accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
- Registration area and cloakroom.
- Coach arrivals and departures: where they stop and how many at a time.
- Sound and time restrictions on terraces.
Contracting the room block: what to look for
- Cut-off date: when unallocated rooms are released.
- Attrition: what percentage of the block you can reduce without penalty, and until when.
- Cancellation: the scale of penalties by date.
- Minimum occupancy linked to the meeting room rate or the DDR.
- Rates for nights before and after the event.
- Tourist tax: in Barcelona, from 1 April 2026, €12 per person per night in 5-star hotels and €8.40 in 4-star hotels, up to a maximum of seven nights, according to Law 2/2026 and the municipal surcharge. We explain it in tourist tax for groups.
- Trade show weeks: if your date coincides with MWC, ISE or another major trade show, the terms change. See the 2027 calendar.
